• Whenever your dog displays a desired behavior or obeys your training commands, make sure to reward him. Little food treats or physical affection are preferred by most dogs; however, verbal praise is also effective.
• Never hit or scold your dog for bad behavior. Punishing will make your dog insecure and could result in aggression. The dog might bite you, become heavily distressed or completely lose trust in humans.

• Do show your dog what behavior is not acceptable. If your dog jumps up on you, simply ignore him for a while. Go to another room and avoid talking to or looking at your dog. Make it clear that such behavior is unacceptable and will result in the dog being ignored.
• Stick to positive reinforcement dog training. Unlike other training methods, positive dog training will ensure that you have a great bonding with your dog. It is also more ethical and usually more effective than other training methods.
• Choose proper timing for rewarding you dog. Any rewards for good behavior must follow it immediately, or the dog will not understand what he is rewarded for. If you are training your dog the SIT command and the dog obeys you, reward him as soon as he sits down. If the dog is already up when you praise him, he will think that he is rewarded for getting up. Clicker training can be used to mark the moment of the good behavior.
• Be consistent with your dog training. You cannot allow your dog to chew your old shoes but forbid him to chew the new ones. The dog will not understand the difference and just get confused.
• Use only simple, one or two word commands. Even the smartest dog will not understand full sentences, he will only respond to commands he has been made familiar with. Use any commands consistently. Your dog won’t understand that “don’t touch” and “off” mean the same thing.
• Exercise your dog frequently. Dogs that get the chance to play or go for a walk regularly tend to be healthier and are usually less destructive and less aggressive.

But probably the most important advice I can give you is to actually follow these simple but effective dog behavior tips. If you do not use them, they obviously are not going to work and you won’t be able to solve your dog behavior issues. Be consistent and persistent, and you will soon start seeing the first results.
